Woman Berates Photographers Over Engagement Shoot at Beauty Spot

A “racist” woman who yelled “go back to Mexico” at photographers capturing a couple getting engaged at a park in Laguna Beach, California, has been outed on the internet.

Trinity Lugo from Trinity Films captured the encounter on her Meta smart glasses. As she was waiting for the happy couple to arrive, the woman approached her and one other photographer to complain about their presence.

“The park is for people who live here to enjoy the park and have picnics, and they don’t allow events on the grass here for that reason,” says the woman, who has been dubbed online as “Proposal Karen.”

The woman then says she has “called the police” to Crescent Bay Point Park who are coming to shut down the proposal.

“It’s every [explicit] weekend and I’m sick and tired of it,” the woman says, becoming increasingly irate. “I’m sick of this s***.”

At that moment, the couple approaches the park, and Lugo, afraid the woman will give the game away, tells her to be quiet. Soon after, the mariachi band strikes up, and the confrontation turns ugly.

“This isn’t Mexico either,” the woman says. “You [explicit], go back to Mexico.”

The woman received plenty of criticism online for her ill-timed rant. “How can you live in such a beautiful place and be so miserable?” asks @robbiebobby17 on Instagram.

The photographer, Lugo, whose sister was being proposed to, tells ABC 7 that she “could not believe” that the woman said those words to her.

Her sister, Hayley, who was apparently aware of the confrontation and was shocked when she saw the footage, says that “it hurts a lot because it’s not just us there. She’s being mean to the whole Mexican culture, the whole Hispanic culture, like everyone’s felt it.”

CBS LA reports that local residents have voiced concerns that engagements at that particular park “have been getting out of hand” in the past year.

The City of Laguna Beach Parks and Rec Department says that professional photographers are required to have a permit to shoot at Point Crescent when arranging a pre-planned shoot. However, it says that “we reject hateful language and behavior of any kind as it does not reflect our community’s values.”
